OVER 500 girls in Mwinilunga have been targeted by the World Vision in its US$100,000 menstrual hygiene project this year, says district manager Trust Mutinta

Mr Mutinta said the project called ‘basic for girls’ was launched on the Menstrual Hygiene Day commemoration and target 500 girls in five schools.

Speaking in an interview, Mr Mutinta said the goal of the project was to improve gender equality for the girls by enhancing their participation mostly in education by providing the basics of menstrual hygiene.

“The US$100,000 project was to help contribute to the ‘No girl should miss class because of not having good menstrual hygiene facilities at school’ “, he said.

Mr Mutinta said the scope of the project included the construction of one girls ablution block and the provision of a mechanized water system to provide water at Katemwa Secondary school including the ablution blocks and 15 standing taps.

“The project would also ensure the construction 14 menstrual hygiene management latrines and 9 standard latrines in 4 schools and the provision of 2,000 re-usable pads for the 500 girls”, he said.

“We will also have girls taught how to make reusable pads using simple locally available materials”, he said
