The increase in the levels of desperation among Zambians for miracles performed by self-proclaimed prophets and pastors is worrying, says Minister of National Guidance and Religious Affairs, Reverend Godfridah Sumaili.
Rev. Sumaili said that she had noted with dismay the high cases of criminality perpetuated by self-proclaimed prophets and pastors who had continued to abuse their followers by demanding huge amounts of money and sexual favours in exchange for miracles.
In an interview with the Sun Rev Sumaili said that Christianity was a dignified religion whose followers must live according to the order of the Bible which offered true direction, advice and wisdom on matters of spirituality.
“We appeal to the Zambian people to desist from chasing after miracles in an effort to break free from bondage associated with social economic pressures which has raised the need for quick answers,” she said.
The Reverend further cautioned everyone to heed biblical teaching according to the gospel in the book of Matthew, a timely warning for people to be on guard and watch against false prophets in the end times who were wolves in sheep skin.
She further said that government through her Ministry and the Ministry of Home Affairs would soon enforce the regulation of churches to ensure that those operating in Zambia were effectively controlled to protect citizens from being taken advantage of by the unscrupulous individuals masquerading as miracle performers.
