A LUSAKA man who allegedly attempted to kill a police officer has been committed to the High Court for summary trial.
In this case, Dauti Sinkutwa, a resident of Garden Park area along Mumbwa Road, is charged for one count of attempting to unlawfully cause the death of Teddy Bbumelo.
According to the case record, on December 21, 2018, Mr. Bbumelo went to Sinkutwa’s home to apprehend him for an undisclosed offence when the incident happened.
When the officer reached the place, Sinkutwa’s wife came out and told him that her husband was not around.
While Mr. Bbumelo, who was in plain clothes, was talking to her, Sinkutwa also came out of the house and hit him with a machete and he fell down.
Sinkutwa then grabbed a pistol from Mr. Bbumelo and shot him in the abdomen. The officer was left in a critical condition and was hospitalized for some time but he has since been discharged from hospital.
When the case came up for mention before Lusaka Magistrate Betty Malupenga on Friday, the State informed the court that the Director of Public Prosecutions has certified Sinkutwa’s prosecution.
Ms. Malupenga then committed the accused to the High Court for summary trial at the next criminal session.
Last month Sinkutwa sued the Zambia Police Service on grounds that he had been detained for 42 days without being charged.
He said in his affidavit in support of leave to issue a writ of habeas corpus that on December 21, 2018 he was detained by police officers at Plainview police post when he went to complain against his female neighbour and Mr. Bbumelo who he claimed appeared drunk.
