Chifundo market traders bemoan lack of toilets

TRADERS at Lusaka’s Chifundo market, in Chilenge Township, want the council repair and maintain the toilets at the institution.

The traders told The Sun that the ablution block at the market has never functioned ever since the sewer tank collapsed years back.

“We have to go outside the market to look for a toilet every time we feel like using it,” said Miriam Mwenda, one of the traders.

“It’s very inconveniencing because we cannot do business without toilets. They (council) need to urgently put up a new sewer tank and maintain the ablution block,” she said.

And Michael Mudenda, another trader, observed that adequate hygiene and sanitation is important to every trading place.

He said the money that traders pay to Lusaka City Council (LCC) should be used to deal with such pressing problems of lack of toilets at markets.

“We are calling on the council to build another sewer tank. Our fear is that the market may be forced to close up because of lack of toilets and poor sanitation,” he said.

But when contacted over the issue, Vincent Mawele, the market master, assured that he was aware of the situation at the market and that the council engineers have already been engaged to evaluate the situation.

“Once the engineers are on site, we will understand the extent of the problem and how we will be able to resolve it,” he stated.
