A QUEST FOR PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY
‘’Responsibility’’ , According to the Oxford living Dictionaries, ‘’Responsibility’’ denotes: ‘’A state or fact of having a duty to deal with something or of having control over someone’’ or ’the state or fact of being accountable or to blame for something’’. The idea is that of being given a duty to which one will be answerable for. King Solomon enjoins all that the whole duty of man is to fear God and keep is commandments (Ecclesaistes.12:13). God wants us to be responsible for all our thoughts, words and actions.
THE CALL TO RESPONSIBILITY (Genesis.1:26; 2:8,9.15,16-17,18).
Responsibility was given through Commandments, i.e. ‘’to be fruitful and Multiply’’ Genesis.1:28) and not to eat from ‘’the tree of knowledge of good and evil’’ (Genesis.2:17). These commandments were given in three key levels, namely;
A. The general call to Responsibility genesis. 1:26
Humanity was mandated to be fruitful and multiply. The success factor in the earth was given to all . God requires that we all work and be productive citizens-work and productivity was given before the fall of Man. (Genesis.1:26-28; 2:8,15). Therefore if one refuses to work, he should not eat (2Thessalonians. 3:10), i.e. Personal Responsibility.
B. The Couple call to responsibility Genesis.2:8,15-17.
Adam and Eve were instructed to Cultivate and manage the garden. The Lord has given us talents and gifts that he wants us to utilize for corporate benefit You may be managing a shop, church, church department or a company, God requires that you do your best as if God was your immediate Supervisor. Colossians.3:23-24, Says, we must do everything whole heartedly to God because he is the ultimate judge and rewarder of all- everything must be done to God’s glory. (1Corinthians.10:31).
C. The call to Personal Responsibility. Genesis 3:1-7;11-13; 14-17.
Man’s disobedience, that is, the eating of the fruit of knowledge of good and evil. Man failed personally, to be responsible in obeying God. Man refused to assume responsibility and blamed others. How do we know that God demanded for Personal responsibility? Firstly, God addresses them as Individuals and not as a collective, demonstrating that God wants accountability for our actions (Genesis.3:10-13). Today, God still demands Personal responsibility from us. Secondly, God questions the individuals (Genesis.3:11-13). God appealed to their free moral agency (God given freedom given to man to make independent choices) which reinforces the issue of Personal Responsibility- which must be in conformity with His Word.
Thirdly, God targets their individual deeds (Genesis.3:11-13). The Lord interrogated the role of each player, addressing them in reverse sequence, the Serpent(Genesis.3:14) the Woman (Genesis.3:15-16) and the man(Genesis.3:17-19). God not only calls for Personal responsibility at all levels of human activity but all humanity will give an account to God based on their conduct(Revelation.20:12)
In conclusion, we must at all costs live Responsibly, Purposefully and Pleasing before God, knowing that we will be accountable. So, we must aim to fear God and keep his commandments(Ecclesiastes.12:13).
