A LUSAKA businessman says women can help stop the child-led gangs currently terrorizing local communities by encouraging their children to only associate with progressive persons.
Mr. Chrispin Chiinda stated that the criminal activities experienced by most communities today could be ended if women played their rightful role of guiding their children.
Mr. Chiinda was speaking on Saturday when he donated K3, 000 towards the activities of the Chiyanjano Women’s League at the Chelstone congregation of the United Church of Zambia.
Mr Chiinda challenged the women to stand up and play their custodian role in the homes by guiding children to desist from indulging into criminal activities such as being in gang.
“People involved in criminal activities come from homes where you, our mothers, are custodians. So it is only you who can help end such problems,” stated the Munali Constituency 2021 aspiring candidate.
“Let us advise our children to be surrounded by progressive people. If your child is always in the company of a plumber, chances are, he will be a plumber too. They will make money and be able to look after you,” he said.
Mr. Chiinda also urged the women to promote the concept of the Keep Zambia Clean and Green Campaign by discussing the issue in their homes.
And speaking earlier, Chiyanjano Women’s League secretary, Ms. Juliet Mkandawire, explained that the league was involved in various activities such as visiting the sick people in health institutions, taking care of orphans and helping prisoners.
Ms. Mkandawire said that the decision by the women to come together to form the league was in an effort to promote unit among themselves.
“Our theme this year is ‘unity and protection’ because God can only protect us when we are a united people,” she said.
The league consists women drawn from the United Church of Zambia (UCZ), the Reformed Church of Zambia (RCZ) and the Presbyterian Church of Zambia (PCZ).
Mrs Mkandawire also disclosed that the league, through the members’ contributions, had purchased a 53 seater bus for easy mobility.
