9-year old drowns in Mpika

A nine year old boy of Chilosha Village, in Chief Chikwanda’s area, of Mpika District, has died after drowning in the Chiloshi River.

Muchinga Province police commissioner, Mr. Joel Njase, confirmed the incident and said that it happened on Sunday February 10, around 10:00 hours.

Mr Njase said Blessing Chilufya, 9, drown whilst swimming with his friend Shadrick Bwalya 8 of the same village.

“Police in Mpika received a report on Sunday, around 1300hrs, via telephone in which a concerned citizen reported that the 9 year old drowned while swimming with his friend, a male juvenile, Shadreck Bwalya, 8, of the same village,” Mr Njase said.

Mr Njase announced that police visited the scene and retrieved the body.

He said inspection of the body, which has since been deposited at Chilonga Hospital Mortuary awaiting burial, revealed that the stomach bulged and had no injuries apart from the blood coming out from the nose and mouth.

In another development four people are nursing serious injuries in Isoka District Hospital after being involved a road traffic accident at Chinyonga hills, along the Isoka-Muyombe road.

Mr Njase said the accident occurred on Monday, February 11, around 15:20hrs and identified the victims as Edward Siwale, 27, of Kampumbu village, who was driving a Toyota Spacio, registration number ACM 1775, travelling from Kampumbu to Isoka, with 4 passengers on board.

He said the accident happened when the motor vehicle incurred a mechanical fault of the gear pulling system and braking system, and failed to ascend the Chinyonga hill but started descending uncontrollably, in reverse, and hit into an embankment on the right side of the road.

Mr Njase said the driver sustained a swollen forehead while the other passengers, except for one, suffered various body injuries and are admitted to the Isoka District Hospital.

Mr Njase said the motor vehicle incurred damaged windscreen, depressed left side of the boby, shattered windscreen and right window glasses and is still on the scene of the accident.
