Tailors cry for sewing machinery empowerment

TAILORS in Lusaka have called on Government to empower them with sewing machinery to assist them boost their businesses.

Those spoken to cited lack of proper sewing machinery as a challenge which had hampered on their business to thrive.

Ms Emelda Chituma, a tailor at Olympia market lamented that her business could not thrive due to lack of sewing machines which could not handle huge orders.

She explained that she had the capacity to handle huge workloads but was unable to do so due to lack of equipment.

She was speaking in an interview in Lusaka.

“Among the challenges we are facing are lack of sewing machines. I have orders but because my machine cannot cope with big orders,

“Sometime customers will not give us big orders which become a challenge in view of lack of ideal sewing machines. We admire our friends on television being empowered. Government needs to empower us as well with proper sewing machines,” she said.

Ms Chituna suggested that the tailors in Olympia market were prepared to access the machines on loans.

Meanwhile Mr Simon Chilongo, a tailor from Matero market said it was difficult to make capital in the absence of adequate sewing machines.

Mr Chilongo explained that he was ready to work with partners if he could be empowered with machines.

“We tried to contact someone from Government to help us through our former chairperson for the market but nothing has happened,

“ We were at some point promised to be given at least K200 each as empowerment money but nothing has materialised,” he said.

And Isaac Ngoma, a tailor at Mtendere market also called for urgent empowerment of tailors in the city.
